Black Hawk County Radon Resources

Everything below is official — county, state, or federal. Use it. The whole premise of this site is that the facts are strong enough on their own.

Get a Test Kit Locally

Black Hawk County Public Health sells short-term radon test kits for $10, lab analysis included, at 1407 Independence Avenue, 5th Floor, Waterloo — regular business hours. The county has also run periodic radon testing events; watch their site for announcements.

The County’s Own Position

The Black Hawk County Board of Health has adopted a formal radon position statement. Highlights: almost 40% of radon tests run in the county from 2000–2024 came back at or above 4.0 pCi/L; the county sees roughly 125 new lung cancer cases and about 66 lung cancer deaths a year and ranks 11th of Iowa’s 99 counties in lung cancer incidence; and the Board recommends mitigation at 4.0+, consideration of mitigation at 2–4, radon-resistant new construction, testing in real estate transactions, and retesting every two years.

State of Iowa

Iowa HHS Radon Program — the state’s radon authority: it certifies measurement and mitigation professionals (Iowa requires certification for paid radon work) and publishes the certified lists, plus the Iowa Radon Home-Buyers and Sellers Fact Sheet that every Iowa home sale must include. The Iowa Radon Survey is the source of the state’s defining statistic: 71.6% of Iowa homes at or above the EPA action level — the largest percentage of any state. The Iowa Cancer Consortium publishes Iowa radon fact sheets, including the ~8.5 pCi/L average indoor level (vs. ~1.3 nationally) and the estimate of roughly 400 radon-attributed lung cancer deaths in Iowa each year.

Federal

EPA — the Map of Radon Zones places all 99 Iowa counties in Zone 1; the Citizen’s Guide to Radon and Home Buyer’s and Seller’s Guide are the standard references. American Lung Association — sells test kits in Iowa and publishes state radon information.

The Two Questions That Matter

Has your house been tested in the last two years? If not, start there — it costs $10. Was the result 4.0 or higher? Then mitigation is the next step, and we’ll connect you with a certified professional to do it.
