Find the u-tube manometer on the system pipe — a small U-shaped tube with colored liquid. If the two columns are uneven, the fan is pulling and the system is working. If they are level, the system is dead. Check it monthly; it is the whole reason the gauge is there. No manometer on your system? That is worth fixing in itself.
A level manometer; a fan that has gone silent (or newly loud — grinding and rattling mean bearings on their way out); visible condensation or ice in the pipe in winter; a cracked or sun-bleached exterior pipe; a fan mounted in a basement or living space (against standard practice — fans belong outside the living envelope, in an attic or outdoors, so a leak on the pressure side cannot dump radon indoors); or a retest number that has crept back up.
Radon fans run 24/7 and typically last 5–10 years. Fan replacement is the most common repair, and it is routine work for a certified mitigation professional. Repairs and upgrades to old systems — re-sealing sump lids, replacing degraded pipe, adding a suction point an original installer skipped — are how a 15-year-old system gets back to doing its job.
